Celebrating Alexander Graham Bell’s First Telephone Call: Special Event Ham Radio Station CG9T On the Air!
Hello, fellow radio enthusiasts!
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be operating a special event ham radio station this March, honouring one of the most significant moments in communications history: Alexander Graham Bell’s first successful telephone call on March 10, 1876, in Boston, Massachusetts. To celebrate this monumental achievement, I’ll be on the airwaves throughout the month using the special event call sign CG9T.
Why Celebrate Bell’s First Telephone Call?
As Canadians, we take great pride in our connection to Alexander Graham Bell. Although the famous “Mr. Watson, come here – I want to see you” call was made in Boston, Bell spent much of his life in Canada and conducted many of his groundbreaking experiments here. His inventive spirit and passion for connecting people continue to inspire radio amateurs and inventors worldwide.
Bell’s first telephone call marked the dawn of a new era. Before that historic moment in 1876, instant voice communication over distance was a dream. Bell’s telephone transformed the world, making it possible for people to connect across cities, countries, and eventually, continents. It’s a fitting milestone for us in the amateur radio community to celebrate, as we too are united by a love of communication and innovation.
Join the Celebration: Work CG9T and Earn a Special Certificate
Throughout March, I invite you to contact CG9T on the air. Whether you’re a seasoned DXer or a newcomer to the hobby, this is a unique opportunity to commemorate Bell’s legacy and add a special contact to your logbook.
To make the event even more memorable, I’m offering special certificates to everyone who works CG9T during March. These certificates are available through HamLog at https://hamlog.online/club/nbawards/1758/. Just log your QSO with CG9T, and you’ll be able to download your certificate to mark your participation in this historic celebration.
How to Participate
- Listen for CG9T: I’ll be operating on various bands and modes throughout March. Keep an ear out, and let’s make a QSO!
- Log Your Contact: After our contact, head over to HamLog to claim your certificate.
- Spread the Word: Encourage your friends and fellow hams to join in. The more, the merrier!
Honouring Bell’s Canadian Connection
Bell’s contributions to science and communication are a source of national pride. He established his summer home and laboratory in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, where he continued to invent and inspire. As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of his first telephone call, let’s remember the spirit of curiosity and innovation that Bell embodied—a spirit that lives on in every CQ we send and every QSO we make.
I look forward to hearing you on the air and sharing this special moment in history. Let’s honour Alexander Graham Bell together—one contact at a time!
73 and good DX.
